Nondestructive characterization of nanoporous alumina films using terahertz scattering imaging

چکیده
Ordered nanoporous (NP) alumina (Al2O3) films were grown on Al substrates through a two-step electrochemical anodization process. The morphology as well the roughness are characterized by terahertz (THz) reflectometry and scattering imaging. In particular, we show that before second anodization, irregular surface of NP Al2O3 leads to significant THz scattering, whereas far more homogeneous following less scattering. regularity is not readily ascertained using visible-light optical microscopy. results corroborated field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) atomic-force (AFM), both which time-consuming, easy operate, can only provide local characterization substrate. THz-based techniques allow for nondestructive entire 10–100 μm length scale important range applications while providing information over macroscopic scan areas, obviate need sample preparation required other common surface-morphology techniques.

Gas adsorption and capillary condensation in nanoporous alumina films.
Gas adsorption and capillary condensation of organic vapors are studied by optical interferometry, using anodized nanoporous alumina films with controlled geometry (cylindrical pores with diameters in the range of 10-60 nm). The optical response of the film is optimized with respect to the geometric parameters of the pores, for potential performance as a gas sensor device. The average thickness...
متن کاملRoom Temperature Ammonia and Humidity Sensing Using Highly Ordered Nanoporous Alumina Films
The effect of pore size and uniformity on the response of nanoporous alumina, formed on aluminum thick films through an anodization process, to ammonia and humidity at room temperature is reported. Pore sizes examined range from 13 nm to 48 nm, with pore size standard deviations ranging from 2.6 nm to 7.8 nm. The response of the material to ammonia and humidity is a strong function of pore size...
متن کاملHigh-speed terahertz reflection three-dimensional imaging for nondestructive evaluation.
We demonstrate high-speed terahertz (THz) reflection three-dimensional (3D) imaging based on electronically controlled optical sampling (ECOPS). ECOPS enables scanning of an axial range of 9 mm in free space at 1 kHz. It takes 80 s to scan a transverse range of 100 mm × 100 mm along a zigzag trajectory that consists of 200 lines using translation stages. To show applicability of the imaging sys...
متن کاملCharacterization of nanoporous low-k thin films by small-angle neutron scattering contrast variation.
Small-angle neutron scattering contrast variation is applied to characterization of nanoporous low-dielectric constant (low-k) thin films. Films are exposed to saturated solvent vapor in air, whereby the pores fill with liquid by capillary condensation. The pores are filled with mixtures of hydrogen- and deuterium-containing solvents to vary the neutron contrast with the matrix (wall). The comp...
متن کاملNondestructive Quantification of Pharmaceutical Tablet Coatings using Terahertz Pulsed Imaging and Optical Coherence Tomography
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Terahertz pulsed imaging (TPI) are two powerful techniques allowing high quality cross-sectional images from within scattering media to be obtained non-destructively. In this paper, we report experimental results of using OCT and TPI for quantitatively characterizing pharmaceutical tablet coatings in the thickness range of 10—140 μm. We found that the spec...
